“I really ought to quit smoking.”

“I’ve been meaning to start exercising.”

“I know I ought to moisturize and use sunscreen.”

“I need to lose some weight.”

Is there a reason you don’t start right now?

The truth is that the sooner you start, the sooner you will get where you want to be. Don’t delay starting on your goals today! Go ahead and toss that half pack of cigarettes in the trash right now. Make a commitment that your next meal will be a healthy one — and when you’re done, promise yourself that the meal after that will be healthy too. Go ahead and plan to work out this evening. Why not call up a friend and ask if he or she wants to exercise together after work?

Whatever your health goal is, you have nothing to lose and everything to gain by starting now. In fact, the longer you wait, the less likely you are to ever begin at all! A lot of people plan to get on that plan next week, but next week never comes; there’s always a new problem, a new obstacle, and mostly a new excuse why they can’t do that right now. Instead of making excuses, make progress!

It’s easy to make excuses when it comes to health and fitness. Most of the things that need to be done aren’t easy! It’s easier to take a pill for your high cholesterol or high blood pressure than it is to stay away from food you love and get in at least a half hour of physical activity daily. But the fact of the matter is that doing the right thing has many more benefits than popping a pill. Don’t be afraid of getting started; keep your eye on the results you want: a leaner, healthier body; no more smelly, expensive cigarettes, the ability to keep up with the kids without getting winded; a reduced risk of disease; whatever your personal goal is.

You know what you need to do. What are you waiting for? Start now!
