Resveratrol has been one of the more promising compounds to come out of anti-aging research in recent years. One news item this week suggests that its anti-inflammatory properties could “be used to treat potentially deadly inflammatory disease, such as appendicitis, peritonitis, and systemic sepsis.” Wow, that’s one heck of a claim. Harvard scientist David Sinclair, the man whose research discovered the anti-inflammatory properties of resveratrol, thinks a lot of the claims are over-stated.
For those who have a background in both biology and chemistry, this recent paper explains how resveratrol “attenuates C5a-induced inflammatory responses in vitro and in vivo by inhibiting phospholipase D and sphingosine kinase activities” [definitions added].
The problem is that Dr. Sinclair’s research “showed that mice fed the chemicals live at least 15% longer than normal mice. But to get such benefits, human beings might have to consume up to 5 grams of resveratrol a day, he says. That’s about 80 pills, at doses found in a typical bottle.” [emphasis added] That’s why, despite what internet ads may imply, Dr. Sinclair has never endorsed a resveratrol product.
Once more we find that the best way to combat aging is to eat right and stay active — both physically and mentally. The occasional glass of red wine can play in certainly, but consuming resveratrol at levels suggested by the current research is nearly impossible.
