Yet one more benefit of drinking green tea is slowing down prostate cancer. Research has already shown that green tea can help prevent heart disease, improve cholesterol levels (in test animals), help people lose weight, and perhaps even benefit Parkinsons and Alzheimers patients.
The science behind slowing — not preventing, not curing — prostate cancer is that epigallocatechin gallate or EGCG, a compound in green tea, is an antioxidant that lowers levels of certain proteins that help cancers grow. The bad news is that it takes the equivalent of 12 cups of green tea daily to significantly reduce levels of hepatocyte growth factor (HGF), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and prostate specific antigen (PSA).
